The Washington Legal Foundation is a nonprofit legal organization. Founded in 1977, it advocates for free market principles, limited and accountable government, individual rights, business civil liberties, and legal ethics. It carries out its mission through publishing, litigation, and outreach programs.
The Washington Legal Foundation has received significant funding from the tobacco industry, as well as Bradley, Olin, and Scaife foundations. Former and current board members include former Attorney General John Ashcroft, former Sen. George Allen (R-VA), Gov. Haley Barbour (R-MI), and Kenneth Starr.
